Getting Started - Goggle App E-mail

index

This is a brief getting started for E-Mail as given in the new Google Apps. This is a form of Gmail, within the Goggle App context. Of course the Google App has many other 'features' besides email.

A. Using ONLINE E-mail.

1. Put http://start.mydomain.com in your browser address line and click [Go]. If this 'start' has not been defined, then http://partnerpage.google.com/mydomain.com will be the generic link.

2. On the 'start' page, click on one of the upper left links -
(a) _Sign in_ to mydomain.com, or the
(b) black _Email_ link below it, or the
(c) _Sign-In_ to see your email here.

Each of these links takes you to a 'Welcome to mydomain.com' page, and presents you with a green sign in block, where you put your user name in the edit block after username: [ ], and you password in the edit block after password: [ ].

You have the choice to 'check' the [ ] remember me on this computer, if you want to skip the above sign in steps in future.

Then CLICK [ Sign In ].

If your account has been set to CHANGE the initial password, you will be prompted to give a new password, to be entered twice. The best is a 'safe', or what is called a 'strong' password, with at least 8-14 characters, with a mixture of upper and lower case, and numbers, and it should NOT include your name.

This will put you on the Start Page, or Inbox, depending on which above link you chose. On the Gmail Start Page, your inbox will be shown in the upper left, and together with any unread emails, if any, and many other things. You can customize this page to your liking. To get to your email itself, click on the upper left _Email_ or _Inbox_ link.

If you directly click on one of the unread emails, it will open in a new browser windows, and you can deal with it from there. But to get to where all your emails are listed, click only upper left _Email_ or _Inbox_ links to avoid confusion.

This should put you on the GMail page, showing your Inbox.

Click on an email to read it ... perform any actions like reply or forward, and when finished, click [ Archive ], so it will not show again in your Inbox, or delete it. You can always view all 'archived' mail by selecting 'All Mail' in the left menu. Even deleted mail will remain in the 'Trash', until you permanently delete it.

The size of the Email online store is a massive 2 GB. Usually this is enough for literally thousands of emails ;=))

B. Using LOCAL Email Client.

If you prefer to use a local email client, like Outlook, or Apple Mail, etc, then this link will give you good details on configuring this account in various email clients.

Some Quick Tips:
- The Incoming (POP3) server is pop.gmail.com
- The Outgoing (SMTP) server is smtp.gmail.com
- Gmail does not use Secure Password Authentication (SPA), but does use both Incoming and Outgoing secure connections (SSL), on very SPECIFIC ports given in the above user help.
- When asked for your user name, usually this requires the full email address, like name@mydomain.com, rather than just the 'name' alone.

Some more quick information -
from : http://www.google.com/support/a/users/bin/answer.py?answer=13287

These are the brief generic details, but they have graphical help for most popular email clients -

Incoming Mail (POP3) Server - requires SSL:

pop.gmail.com
Use SSL: Yes
Port: 995

Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server - requires TLS:

smtp.gmail.com (use authentication)
Use Authentication: Yes
Use STARTTLS: Yes (some clients call this SSL)
Port: 465 or 587

Account Name:

your full email address (ex.: 'chris@mydomain.com')

Email Address:

your full email address (ex.: 'chris@mydomain.com')

Password:

your password

Please note that if your client does not support SMTP authentication, you won't be able to send mail through your client using your email address.
